Awakened

It offered up its soul; it said
__from this ancient forest, farmland laid,
__take your seat at your desk
____run with your friends
____kiss her
__learn an instrument
__ride back from the movies, retelling the tale
__water the lawn with your own sweat,
____as the hunter, the farmer, upon this ground

There are those who will tell you
__there are those will would say
that soul is found only
__upon the straightest of streets,
__— places without curves,
______________colour,
______________canopy —
__in crumbling buildings where
__people pay proudly too much to live above laundromats
____trap rats, despise their no(i)sy neighbours
or
__bang on radiators in winter,
__squinting suspiciously, out frosted single-glazing,
__at cars
__from other streets,
____other towns:
______places unworthy and homes unequal
like yours

they're lying

say so
